not even listening?

by Blue-Eyed Bride on October 28, 2008

Todd and I have a huge crowd of people coming in town this weekend for the USC v. Tennessee game. Thirteen of his law school friends will stay at our house from Friday until Sunday. We’re very excited because it promises to be a very fun weekend. I’ve got a lot running through my head of things I need to do to get ready. I’m going to make some casseroles to have ready for Friday night as people trickle into town, I need to get tailgate food in order, and wash all of our towels and sheets to make sure that everyone is accommodated.

Todd goes out of town today until late Thursday night, so I’ll be handling most of this on my own and I wanted to make sure that we weren’t forgetting something before he left town.

I called Todd at work to run some of this by him and here’s how the conversation went:

Me: “We need to make sure that we have tailgating in order because it will be so late when you get back.”

T: “Yeah.”

Me: “We should just order some chicken and pick it up on Saturday morning. I’ll make pigs in blankets, cookies, brownies, and something else that will stay hot.”

T: “Sounds good.”

Me: “You’re going to help me, right? I just don’t want to forget anything.”

T: “I understand.”

Me: “Well, are you writing any of this down?”

T: “No. Actually, I really haven’t even been listening to you. About fifteen emails just came in and I’ve been reading them while you’re talking.”

Excellent!

Yikes! I, too, am guilty of tuning people out. I can’t help it sometimes. HA! Good luck with the upcoming events!!

Wow…remind me to come tailgate at your place sometime, what a hostess!

Oh and I totally understand what you mean about husbands not listening. I tell mine things all the time and without fail a few weeks later he swears up and down I never mentioned it. Hmm…

5 The Mrs. October 28, 2008 at 3:14 pm

ha ha… i know exactly how that is, except my hubby can recite back to me word for word what I said, but not remember the conversation 2 days later when he’s supposed to be doing something…

you’re a Hostess with the Mostest for sure..

6 Lauren October 28, 2008 at 3:21 pm

I know exactly how you feel. I guess I’ve always known they don’t always listen, but I’m always hopeful. I guess it just frustrates me more when they actually admit it and know full well that they aren’t listening at all. Oh well, you gotta love them anyway. Sounds like you’re going to have a great party!

23 southern daze October 28, 2008 at 5:01 pm

Apparently our husbands are alike as well :-)

Sounds like you have a BIG weekend in store for you. Fun time for sure but, if you're anything like me (and I know you are!), you'll have a bunch of stress to deal with before you get to enjoy yourself. I wish I lived closer so I could help you through this week. Plus, I'd love to see UT & USC play!

Take a deep breath and focus on just one thing at a time. As Lee likes to say when I'm overwhelmed…"you can't eat an elephant in one bite!"

Let me know if I can help!!

24 Allison aka HaselBride October 28, 2008 at 6:12 pm

Oh, Erin, this is too funny! I feel bad though, but I think this is really typical behavior in most households. Haha. Good luck with the big weekend, sounds intense, but will be so fun I’m sure!

25 Justin and Jenn October 28, 2008 at 7:17 pm

You know it’s love when he feels comfortable enough to straight out tell you he wasn’t listening and was doing something else. LOL!

The party sounds fun! A lot of people, but a lot of fun!

Haha! Don’t you just love how you can tell when hey aren’t really listening?!?

34 GrannySmithGreen October 28, 2008 at 10:35 pm

You might as well learn this lesson now. THIS is what girlfriends are for! WE actually listen and write it down. Bless your heart! As long as there’s food and a place for them to sit–they will be fine. Don’t worry about making it “cute” or anything!

Wait a minute, I’ll give him a little bit of credit–he did tell the truth! Ha ha!

35 newlywedstilettos October 29, 2008 at 8:25 am

You are going to be quite the domestic diva this weekend! That is quite the crowd!!

And as for the hubby…you gotta love men :)

I think once one has a ring on her finger that they put ear plugs in! You are not the only one who has experienced this phenomenon!
