swimsuit help

by Blue-Eyed Bride on June 28, 2009

I need your help and honest opinions. We’ll be spending a week on the gulf coast in August with my entire family and at that time I’ll be two months post-partum. I have a feeling that my tummy won’t be bikini ready by then. {The good old linea negra is still there} I’m going to do what I can to get ready for the beach trip, but I’m still healing so working out isn’t an option yet. And I’m busy! There’s not a whole lot of free time for me to get out and work on getting bikini ready when I’m feeding every three hours!

I’m looking for some stylish, flattering one-piece swimsuits. I might try a tankini, but I’ve never been a huge fan. My problem with one-piece suits is that they always seem to take all of my shape away and completely flatten me out.  I found the suits below at J.Crew and think they may not be so unflattering. What do you think?

Please send links to some flattering swimsuits that fit this description. Let me know your favorites.

Have you looked into Miraclesuit? They might be a bit old fashioned, but they are designed to suck you in, Which is probably more important for you than being modern right now.

I’m a big fan of Lands End for swimsuits- but my favorite one of the season is this swimsuit at Nordstroms in red:

I have a one-piece strapless suit from JCrew and LOVE it. The great thing is you can order them online and return them to the store if you don’t care for it.

I think those are all beautiful one pieces. Lands End has some great stuff this year. I was looking through their catalog just the other day and thinking they’ve got some really cute one pieces. I also get the Athleta catalog, they are a sister company of The Gap. Some of their one pieces are very “athletic” looking, but other look cute: http://athleta.gap.com/browse/category.do?cid=46669

Good luck! Let us know what you find!

I own this suit from Victoria’s Secret.

It is super flattering, and it doesn’t give that Speedo look a lot of one-pieces give me [read: uniboob].

Plus, it kind of has that retro feel which is always fun.

I love A & C! Another place you might look…and hear me out…is Lands End. I never shop there, but last weekend I was looking through a catalog at my parents’ house and was amazed at the wide variety of adorable one-piece suits. Ruffles, ruching (never know how to spell that one!), all kinds of cute details. Some even had tummy control, which might be helpful based on your post-partum concerns. Check it out!

13 PreppyGirl June 28, 2009 at 6:34 pm @PreppyGirlWorld

You should check out Target.. I went there and got a brown low V halter one piece for $18! It’s similar to the first one but has a little tortoiseshell bead at the bottom of the v.. very cute and still shows off the curves. Let us know what you end up getting! Good luck!

I can’t help with a store because I’m in the wrong country and therefore clueless about it, but I love the third one – the neckline halter-type strap looks like it’ll really support your boobs, which I imagine are a bit bigger than before, and I LOVE the cross-rouching look underneath that.

Good luck, but don’t overdo it. You’ll look great no matter what!

I think the last one is the “youngest” looking one. The other two are ok, but the legs seem a little lower cut than I like. I am sure you will look great in whatever you choose!

17 Jess June 28, 2009 at 7:12 pm

I vote for the third one!

I know you said you weren’t a fan of tankinis, but you may want to consider one while you’re still in this phase. It sounds like you’re losing weight pretty quickly and, in my experience, tankinis allow for that. Especially if it’s a halter top.

Let us know what you decide!

18 Fashionista82 June 28, 2009 at 8:09 pm

Love the third one! You may also want to look into a tankini, “Lucky Brand” has some really cute ones. I feel that they do tend to give a little more “shape”. Good luck!

19 Practically Perfect... June 28, 2009 at 8:10 pm

I have to agree with the Land’s End comments – that’s where I got mine this year (in a beautiful, bright raspberry!), and I got a lot of compliments and head-turns, ha ha :-) But, between the options you posted, I would have to say that I prefer the first two, with a slight preference for the very first suit.

I like the first one, or this one at Anthropologie is cute…it sort of give a little hint of skin as apposed to a bikini…

21 Beth June 28, 2009 at 8:35 pm

Run, don’t walk, to Victoria’s Secret website. They have the such beautiful suits and are all on sale. Consider a tankini with “high-waisted” bottoms. It will hold your tummy in place and make it look flat. Also, they have the best bras in their suits. Also, if you are worried about your tummy, you may want to stay away from the ones that do not have any visual distraction from the “pooch.” Look for the kind with ruching or a defined waist. Good luck!!

22 GRITS June 28, 2009 at 8:41 pm

Out of the one’s you’ve posted, I really like the third one. Oh, and the 2nd one. You’ve got good taste =)

Also going to agree with the ladies. Check out Victoria’s Secret’s website. And Neiman Marcus is having a sale on their suits right now too….

i like the first one best. i’m also going to chime in with some of the other comments and say try land’s end. they have lots of flattering suits. also, i get the athleta magazine and they seem to have some quality yet stylish pieces!

25 amy June 28, 2009 at 9:12 pm

I ordered 3 one-piece J. Crew bathing suits last year. I am 5′8″ tall and even on me, the leg was cut far too low. It cut at a very unflattering part of my legs and3 I had to return all 3 as a result. Happy shopping!

26 Erica June 28, 2009 at 9:22 pm

I picked one up for a trip we’ll be taking in August (I’ll be about 5 months pregnant and not sure if I’m going to want to be in a bikini either). This (http://oldnavy.gap.com/browse/product.do?cid=48619&vid=1&pid=615110&scid=615110052) was on sale at Old Navy for $5, you can’t go wrong even if you don’t end up wearing it!

27 Southern June 28, 2009 at 9:29 pm @WendyLW

Yep, Land’s End is a great source for suits. The miraclesuits are really fabulous, and if you want something to really suck you in, they work. They actually have two layers of fabric (most of them) and the first layer sucks you in, then the second smooths you out. It really does help with the belly bit! ;-) I’ve never worn J Crew, but I’m sure they are good, but you just can’t go wrong with a miraclesuit.

28 Jac June 28, 2009 at 10:00 pm

I really like option 2, the gray one. I think it might also accomodate easier feedings. However, all 3 are cute and young looking, despite being one peice.

29 A Walk with the Marshalls June 28, 2009 at 10:04 pm

I’ve always found that one pieces always make my thighs, butt and legs so unflattering. They are the least attractive area on my body all ready and how the bathing suit cuts around that area just seems to make my extra skin just bulge out more! I don’t know about you but pregnancy has done a doozie on my bottom half and I’m sure it will be even less attractive now. I would def get a one piece if I was you but I would grab a great coverup to wrap around your bottom too! I think they make a once piece look so classy and it is so easy to throw on when you hop out of the pool or chair!

30 Ronda Blackburn June 28, 2009 at 10:54 pm

You should check out some of Lilly Pulitzer’s one pieces…I have a low cut v-neck halter one piece that is sexy, preppy and still one piece! The other alternative could be one of those “vintage inspired” bikinis that have a tall waist like this one (http://www.lillypulitzer.com/Swim/Malibu-Vintage-Bikini-Top/invt/71687&bklist=icat,5,colone,,womens,womensswim) It’s also lilly and looks really cute on :) Could work!

33 Amanda Marvin June 28, 2009 at 11:52 pm @amattingly81

I love the 3rd one the best. I think with all the design on top will take away any boxiness the suits may give.

34 Amy June 29, 2009 at 6:21 am @alsoto_mulhall

I would totally go for a whole retro look. It’s classic! Vintage inspired one-piece suit (http://tinyurl.com/l2gr4g), big Jackie O sunglasses (http://tinyurl.com/nfylus) and a large floppy hat (http://tinyurl.com/nrfwky). Add some great bangles with a tunic for a cover up and you’re good to go! The suit’s top will showcase the new mommy boobs while the ruching will mask any areas needing masking. Why not have a little fun while on vacay?

36 USCEmily June 29, 2009 at 9:06 am

I’m going against the crowd- I like #2 the best, although I think any of those would be flattering!! And I’m with you, never been a fan of the tankini. If you’re going to wear that, you might as well wear a one piece- just my opinion!

37 Cee June 29, 2009 at 9:43 am

I love the last one…they are all really cute though and not frumpy at all! I always feel like I look horrible in one pieces but those are all very chic.

38 Lyndsey June 29, 2009 at 10:16 am

I love all three. I have never loved one pieces because of that very thing either!
The last one is pretty! But I do love the brown! Oh decisions!

39 Ashley June 29, 2009 at 10:22 am

I bought this one for this season — http://www1.macys.com/catalog/product/index.ognc?ID=348439&CategoryID=12420

I know they have them at places other than Macys. It’s very flattering and has that great retro look. I believe they also have a ruffled one this season. But make sure you can try it on because the one I bought was a size or maybe two bigger than all the other brands I tried on — but oh so worth it! Good luck :)

43 nici comer June 29, 2009 at 11:16 am

i like all three. but since becoming a mom, i am a HUGE fan of the tankini. easy on and off, great for nursing. i particularly like the ones at boden (www.bodenusa.com) for a modern (read: not so matronly) look at tankinis. good luck. you’ll look great regardless.

44 Amanda June 29, 2009 at 12:24 pm

I like all three, but my favorite would be the third one! Good luck with the search! I also totally agree with you on how most of the one piece suits I find they are quite unflattering, unless I’m buying a Speedo for SCUBA diving.

45 Stephanie June 29, 2009 at 1:10 pm

The third one is fabulous! All three are cute, but the last one is very stylish and chic.

46 Jackie June 29, 2009 at 2:01 pm

There are too many cute one-piece suits at Anthropologie to link! All are super adorable.

47 Anna June 29, 2009 at 2:20 pm @carolinabride

Being an old mom of three (probably as old as you are now!), I would have opted for a tankini with a top like a one piece. There was one on the JCrew website that was similar to what I’m talking about. i like the bottoms to cover to the mid-hip area (little higher than a normal bikini, but not grandma panty. I would like the top of the tankini covering the “baby tummy” (if you even have one left by then!) This was also a good option to be able to pull the top of the tankini aside to nurse the baby. I used a light weight blanket to cover his/her face.

59 Missy July 1, 2009 at 9:46 pm

#1 looks like it would be the easiest to breastfeed in. You definitely want to have a suit that you can modestly open up to breastfeed (if you are still doing that). It looks like it would be pretty flattering too ;-)

Hey mama! I do have one place for you to at least take a peek..( and I DID like the last style you posted with the halter type top..) Have you ever shopped at Newport News? They had suits this year with what I think they call FX?? And it actually is quite tight and helps you lose a size or whatever..in the areas YOU need it.. I got a navy blue one with sequins and little beads..and it is sooo pretty. Its a bit of a pull to get it on, but it’s not really uncomfortable wearing it. Don’t know if they are now on sale..or not many left etc..but it might be worth a look..I think mine was on sale and was $49.99. ( JUST LOOKED..70% sale.. it doesn’t want to work w/ me if I enter http://www.newportnews.com but DOES work if I just do a search for Newport News and then clicked on the site!) Hope you find something that you can really enjoy wearing and you have a great time!!! THanks for the side site of Hudson too..that will be neat!!! Lynn
