home tour tuesday: the living spaces

by Blue-Eyed Bride on August 18, 2009

Welcome back to Home Tour Tuesday!

(no, the stork is not still in front of our house)

img_0429

I completely neglected this idea for the past few weeks. I didn’t forget, but it just got harder and harder to find a room to photograph that hadn’t been completely overrun with baby gear or dog toys. I’m a neat person, but I could spend all day picking up dog toys and baby stuff. But if anyone is at all interested anymore, here’s another room in our home for your viewing pleasure.

So here are our two living spaces. You can see the black front door on the right in the picture below. Our home was built in the 1930s and was lived in by the same family until 2007. At that time, someone bought it and completely updated the house, but kept a lot of the original fixtures and hardware. You can see that our living space is wide, but not very deep, so we decided to split it up into two areas that basically serve as two rooms.

img_0666

This space is one that we rarely use. Hudson’s swing stays in this area and this is also where we put his little activity gym. I will sit over here and read every once in a while, but this has kind of become the unused space in the house. We’re definitely in need of a pretty round, tufted ottoman in here.

img_0667

The big round table has been in my family for a long time and we my breakfast table before we got married. I love it in that corner now. At Christmas time, we move the table and put the tree in that corner. It was a great spot for it last year. Does anyone notice the never-ending amount of law books on the top shelf there? Don’t you think those belong in, say, a law office?

img_0668

the Christmas tree– and you can see the high back chairs before we recovered them and the old red rug that I’m so happy isn’t in that room anymore!

img_0008

The most beautiful accessory in the room: Hudson’s SweetPeace swing.

img_0669

These chairs (there are 2 of them) belonged to my great grandmother and then to my grandmother. I picked out fabric at Calico Corners and had a local guy recover them for $200 total a few months ago. I love the way they turned out and I love the animal print on the back.

img_0670

and of course, Princess Fiona in all her glory.

img_0671

This is the view from just inside the front door. And now that blank wall space on the left is really driving me crazy!

img_0672

This is the area where we spend all of our time. That sofa is so comfortable and I think I spent most of my pregnancy right there. The chair rocks and that’s where I’ve spent most of my time now that Hudson has arrived.

And at the bottom of the photo you can see my beautiful first born, Boudreaux, who has been completely left out of this blog lately. He’s such a sweetie.

img_0665

The poor girl in the orthodontist commercial probably didn’t want to have her face on my blog.

img_06731

So thanks for coming back for another edition of Home Tour Tuesday. Not sure what we’ll be seeing next week– probably whatever is clean. It’ll either be the master bedroom or the kitchen/dining area. Happy Tuesday, y’all!

I love the way you’ve divided up that front room into the 2 spaces. We have a 1929 home and it’s interesting to think about how the space would have been set back then. For example, our dining room is about 50% bigger than our living room. I suppose with no flat screens they didn’t hang out in there as much! Anyway, thanks for sharing!

I love the home tours – so glad they’re back! Especially since you are my Fabulously Redone Old Home Inspiration!

3 Becca August 18, 2009 at 12:01 pm

Love it! I especially love the dresser in your main room- it’s so pretty!

4 Jenny from Lucky in Love August 18, 2009 at 12:18 pm

As you may’ve guessed, I have the same problem with the law books. Matt is apparently obsessed and every time the library at his firm threatens to get rid of them he takes them. So his office is full and so is our home. He says he likes the books better than online. Who is this man?

Your house is so gorgeous Erin and I can’t wait to see it in person someday! Will you help me decorate when we move into our own place?? I will need all of the help I can get! You should SEE what I have to work with :)

5 Practically Perfect... August 18, 2009 at 12:20 pm

Great style :-) And as for the never-ending amount of law books, Chris has an entire BOOKSHELF devoted to his philosophy books, so believe me when I say that it could be worse!

6 Liza August 18, 2009 at 12:48 pm

I LOVE your house! It is the perfect combination to me – old world charm, but with modern updates. Love it!!! And what a cool idea to upholster the front and back of the chairs differently. I would have never thought of doing that!

7 Kaleigha August 18, 2009 at 12:56 pm

What a beautiful, luxurious room! Love your house!

8 j August 18, 2009 at 12:57 pm

I’m so glad your Home Tour is back! I was just thinking about it the other day actually. I love what you’ve done with your front room. Splitting it into two separate living areas is an awesome idea. And you have AMAZING taste! Can’t wait to see the rest!

12 Megan August 18, 2009 at 1:31 pm

I think I say this everytime but I love your ‘taste’, so classy! Everything is just so beautiful! When I get a home I am coming to you for decorating advice!

19 Samma August 18, 2009 at 2:28 pm

I love your rugs! My next big purchase, (after custom drapes), is quality rugs.

I definitely understand about the law books! Mine are all in a huge box which is too heavy for me to move back to storage, or my office.

20 jenny August 18, 2009 at 2:30 pm

I love all the natural light you get. Such a beautiful space!

21 Spotty Prep August 18, 2009 at 2:32 pm

What a gorgeous living area! I love Boudreaux waiting at the door :)

My husband brought 2 boxes of outdated law books home from work one time because they were about to be thrown out. I looked at him like he had grown 3 heads, haha. Thankfully he came to his senses and gave the books away.

22 breadwinner wife August 18, 2009 at 2:45 pm

LOVE the dresser that your plasma/flatscreen sits on. It is so classy and will forever be a timeless piece!! I eventually will be looking for a piece just like that when we buy our first house in about six months or so.

27 Andi August 18, 2009 at 4:35 pm

Your house is beautiful! I love the tour.

28 The Northerner August 18, 2009 at 4:46 pm

Law books are beginning to take over our book shelves too!

Love the front rooms!

29 Becky August 18, 2009 at 5:00 pm

What I love the most is the prominently featured BOPPY in that last shot! That’s how my house looks right now — we have two Boppies that seem to float from room to room as needed, plus, of course, the swing, activity mats, Baby Bjorn (do you have one of those? Mine is a true lifesaver.), bottles, pacifiers — Lord, the list is endless. Babies truly take over a home, don’t they? Good thing they’re so cute and precious!
Thanks for sharing your home with us — it’s beautiful!

30 Ally August 18, 2009 at 5:25 pm

I LOVE your house. It’s pretty much my dream house. The outside is just so sweet and you have the amazing style–I love that your home has character. So beautiful. Seriously, gorgeous.

Random, where did you get the art above your fireplace? It’s so beautiful and I’m trying to find a nice large piece to hang above our fireplace as we’re changing our accent colors…

Also, I bought the Anthropologie top you blogged about a few weeks back. Best.Thing.Ever–thank you for alerting me to it!!

Have a great day!

31 Emily Neuroh August 18, 2009 at 5:28 pm

33 Kassie August 18, 2009 at 5:52 pm

Your house is stunning!! Impeccably decorated and really cozy. It looks like a family lives there, combined with something out of a magazine!!

34 Miss HoneyDew August 18, 2009 at 5:53 pm

Your home is beautiful!

35 Spanish Preppy Girl August 18, 2009 at 6:03 pm

You have a beautiful house!!

36 Jan Jessup August 18, 2009 at 6:12 pm

Erin, I have to tell you how beautifully your great grandmother’s chairs turned out that you did in the Calico Corners jacquard fabrics! I love to see antique pieces upholstered in more contemporary fabrics. It keeps them from looking too much like period pieces–or escapees from a historic home.

Here’s a suggestion for the law books: put them on the bottom shelf! They won’t be nearly as visible behind the furniture. Happy decorating!

37 Amanda August 18, 2009 at 7:22 pm

Love the house! I love the decor of the front room!

38 Rachel @ it's a hero August 18, 2009 at 7:23 pm

39 roxanne August 18, 2009 at 7:25 pm

Where did you get your sofa? I’m on the hunt for a new one, and yours looks fabulously comfy and practical!

40 Kk in Dallas August 18, 2009 at 8:45 pm

You do have great taste!

41 Angela August 18, 2009 at 9:19 pm

You have a very beautiful home!! I love the character of a older home that has been “modernized”. Can’t wait to see the next room on your tour! =)

42 GingerSnap August 18, 2009 at 9:34 pm

What a gorgeous home! You all are so blessed! It looks picture perfect! :)

43 Es August 18, 2009 at 10:47 pm

Your house looks wonderful, I wouldn’t have expected anything less from you, Erin. Terrific style for such an inviting home. I love your attention to details and I think the black front door was a great choice, very classy. Looks like a wonderful place to call home after a long day at work.

I also love how the hardwood floors go perfectly with the various furniture. The brown ottoman works well to tie the brown in as well.

Can’t wait to see your kitchen/ dining room! There’s something about a person’s kitchen that tells a lot about themselves. I know that in my family it has always been a place where we’ve gathered and spend a great deal of time. I’m sure yours is lovely.

44 Melissa August 19, 2009 at 1:39 pm

Hey Erin! I’m with you on the law books. I made Ryan take most of his to his office, and the rest got boxed up and put in the attic. Your house is beautiful!

45 Heather August 19, 2009 at 2:41 pm

Your home is beautiful!

46 Legallyblondemel August 19, 2009 at 3:35 pm

Once again, I pink puffy heart your home and your interior decorating style. Yes, including the law books; I laughed when I first spotted those, by the way, since they are the universal sign of “Caution: a lawyer lives here!”

By the way, my offer still stands – I’ll trade you wine for your interior design help. Ever consider doing a feature where you help readers makeover a room?

47 Becky August 19, 2009 at 3:37 pm

Love your home!

I noticed the Boppy near the couch, too. Even when not nursing, I found my Boppy to be the greatest back-saver EVER! How did moms ever get by without them???

48 Hollie August 19, 2009 at 3:50 pm

My two favorites:

The painting above the fireplace. It is calling my name…

and your entertainment center/hutch.

Where did you find these?

49 amber August 19, 2009 at 7:14 pm

Beautiful! Can’t wait to see the rest!

50 Rachel August 19, 2009 at 9:44 pm

Your home is so adorable! From the outside alone, all I can think of is how happy I’d be if I could find a home this cute! Love how old it is and how much charm it has. Thanks for sharing it on here :)

51 Britain August 20, 2009 at 1:32 am
