why don’t you just go ahead and say it?

by Blue-Eyed Bride on September 10, 2009

Alright, so here goes another rant. I’m going to complain about something completely meaningless.

I love music. I don’t discriminate against any one genre of music. As long as the song is decent, I can listen to it. I even like Country music. Not all of it, but a lot of it.

I am, however, so frustrated when I listen to Country songs and they almost cuss. Why don’t you just go ahead and cuss? I’m pretty sure the little kids that are listening can figure out what you were going to say or what that almost cuss word really means. I know that Country music is supposed to be the most wholesome out of all of the music genres, but when you just rearrange the words to be bass ackwards, isn’t that pretty much the same as cussing?

Here are some examples of this:

“the fits gonna hit the shan.” (American Ride by Toby Keith)

“some beach…” (Some Beach by Blake Shelton)

“Shhhhh….. It happens!” (It Happens by Sugarland)

Now, I don’t particularly like to hear cussing in any kind of music, but these songs just sound like a 5 year old pushing the envelope with his mother just as far as he can. “I didn’t really cuss so you can’t get mad at me!”

And I know why they don’t actually cuss in Country songs. They want their song to be played and not bleeped out. It’s the wholesome genre. This just annoys me.

So it’s silly,  it’s a little bit fun, but it also drives me bonkers. If you’re going to make a statement by almost cussing, why don’t you just go ahead and say it? Because, seriously, it just sounds like a child trying to get away with something.

I completely agree! This is definitely a pet peeve for me. I grew up listening to Country music with my dad but all of this “new Country” music absolutely drives me crazy! I’m still a fan of Lady A though….they really are awesome :) .

I agree, and I find it SO annoying too! Especially American Ride…the song isn’t that bad, but it drives me crazy each time they say “the fits gonna hit the shan.” It doesn’t make sense, and it just sounds stupid when you know exactly what they are really meaning!

If you listen to “Some Beach” he is singing about wishing he was at the beach, with corny lyrics to boot. Some country lyrics are just super silly, but I do not find it annoying. Would you want your children listening to cussing on the radio? I wouldn’t.

Oh my gosh…you totally read my mind. I’m so glad you mentioned the Sugarland song!! Er! I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Sugarland but I seriously hate that song. I think it is just so lame.

I completely agree about the Toby Keith song. There’s absolutely nothing I like about the song, and that one line seals the deal! I’m the country music fan in our house (recently converted my hubby), and he especially likes Eric Church; his new CD is fun.

I could not agree more!! I hate all of those songs simply BECAUSE of that!

7 Sarah September 10, 2009 at 10:24 am

The one that annoys me the most is Toby Keith’s American Ride….I absolutely hate, hate, hate that line and it gets stuck in my head even if I hear the first part of the song and change the channel. A meaningless rant…I think not. Great post! :)

That’s funny. At my old house growing up some person had “Mudder Trucker” written on the tailgate of their lifted 4×4 pickup. How white trash is that? I agree with you.

If you google Jason Aldean’s song, Country…you’ll find another one of your sayings in there too!

9 Lauren Kelly September 10, 2009 at 10:55 am

It’s funny, but I’ve never thought about this along these lines until you mentioned it!!

10 Carolina Girl September 10, 2009 at 11:05 am

Most of them don’t bug me that much except “the fits gonna hit the shan.” Now that one is super annoying! haha

11 Jen September 10, 2009 at 11:08 am

Add to your list:

Kenny Chesney’s Shiftwork

“a big ole pile of shift…… work”

12 Megan September 10, 2009 at 11:18 am

HA! This is a VERY good point! It just sounds silly all twisted !

13 Jess September 10, 2009 at 12:11 pm

LOL… this is funny.

Honestly, it doesn’t bother me. Well, Toby Keith bothers me, in general. But, the rest of them (to me) are able to use the “hidden cussing” with both meanings. “Some Beach” is actually talking about a beach…. “Shift Work” is actually talking about shift work…. “It Happens” is actually talking about the crazy stuff that randomly happens. So, I think they make it work, lol.

I actually *love* that Sugarland song. It’s so much fun to sing along (especially at one of their concerts, lol).

14 Cee September 10, 2009 at 12:11 pm

I agree! I used to like country but now it just annoys me because of cheesy things like that!

15 Krissy September 10, 2009 at 12:29 pm

Those songs crack me up! Toby’s song and Kenny Chesney’s “Shift Work” seriously annoy me, though!! I love Sugarland, and always dance around when “It Happens” comes on. :)

I couldn’t agree more! I love country music but I find all those songs extremely annoying because of the fake cussing!

17 Natalie September 10, 2009 at 1:29 pm

Some of the newer groups are cussing — well, saying @ss, like the new Zac Brown Band song — my husband plays it on their station all the time. I asked him about it b/c I was a little shocked actually, that they would allow a song with blatant cussing, but he says they play it more in the hrs that children wouldn’t be listening.

Toby Keith, in general, annoys me.

Honestly, I would rather my daughter listen to country over anything.

18 Legallyblondemel September 10, 2009 at 2:42 pm

I’m the weirdo who finds this type of almost cussing clever, but then again, I’m not comfortable with swearing myself. I don’t at all mind it in others – as evidence, I married a sailor-level-swearer – but have a difficult time with it myself for whatever reason.

That being said, I also listen to most types of music but can’t really bear the “new” (post Garth Brooks) country, more due to the music than the lyrics.

19 Di September 10, 2009 at 3:13 pm

Country stations just don’t play them if they have curse words. Sometimes they will let a little get by them, but in general, it is pretty hard to get spins if there are curse words.
In concert, Toby Keith sings it correctly (with the words you would expect)

My radio station bleeped out Kid Rock when he says “smokin funny things”. They just bleep it out and there is a blank in the song!!! That drives me crazy.

20 christina cadden September 10, 2009 at 8:31 pm

hmm, I wonder the same thing!

21 Megan September 10, 2009 at 11:25 pm

This made me laugh. A lot. And I agree with you.

22 Jane September 11, 2009 at 12:20 am

Haha! I never thought before that shhh it happens could be anything but shhh it happens! Thanks for making me smile at my naivete! :)

23 LinZ September 11, 2009 at 7:37 am

Agreed! And to add to your on-going list
“Love You” – Jack Ingram
Love you, love this town;
Love this mother-lovin’ truck that keeps breakin’ lovin’ down
There’s only one four-letter word that’ll do:
Love you

:)

They are all a little on the annoying side, but some of them are hilarious. And one day I caught myself figuring out how TK switched around the words for the Fan Song. Heard it this morning and thats the most annoying one on the list!

24 Julie @ Wearing Mascara September 11, 2009 at 2:33 pm

I hear ya girl. This annoys me too and it’s exactly like you said… a little kid trying to get away with it.

25 C September 12, 2009 at 10:47 am

Do you like contemporary Christian music? Sounds like you are in the Columbia area and 89.7 is a great station for this type of music. No worries about cussing there and some great music praising our Lord.

Congrats on your baby boy!

Apparently I’m not as withit as you guys… I never picked up on any of these “fake curse” songs. And I do listen to country music regularly! Haha! I guess I always listened to the chorus of “Some Beach” and really thought that it was just about the beach. And I never even heard (or realized I heard) the “shhhhh” part in “It Happens.”

I guess the fake cursing doesn’t bother me as much because for the *most* part it’s a simple play on words which I find interesting. (I’m an English teacher.) I think it’s pretty clever. I’m not by any means endorsing cursing. I’m a Christian, and I try not to curse or surround myself with those who do curse. That’s a personal preference for me. While the fake cursing in these songs does not really bother me, I do realize that it is offensive to some. However, I do want to point out that common “secondary” curse words (as some refer to them) are said by most everyone… crap, heck, dang, etc. These words originated as a way to get around saying the actual curse word. In my opinion, the intent is still the same. (Now, I DO say these words on a regualar basis… and I’m not downing people for saying them. Just food for thought.) Back to the songs, I guess I’m more offended by the intended meaning of some of the songs rather than the curse words. For example, in “It Happens,” she sings about a walk of shame…

I don’t mean to offend, I just started thinking about this after reading your post and the follow-up comments, and it got me thinking… so it’s really just my own food for thought…

i agree that it was funny the 1st time but after that it’s like CUSS already!
