my fictional dream house: something’s gotta give

I posted a picture of “Erica Berry’s” closet from Something’s Gotta Give in yesterday’s post on dream closets and realized how much I love that whole house. Did y’all know it’s not really a house? It was just a set for the movie.

I found some of the set photos at Architectural Digest and will definitely be putting these in my dream house files.

The kitchen and dining room are my favorite rooms from the movie. The industrial range and the endless amounts of counter space. I love that the bottom cabinets were built to look like pieces of furniture in the room instead of built-ins.  It’s light and beachy, but not pristine. Her cookbooks are out, her cooking utensils are out. It looks like someone lives there and loves to cook.

Todd and I have our hearts set on a round dining table when we live in a house that actually has a formal dining room. I want a giant round table that invites great conversation. Just like the one in the picture above. The interior French doors actually remind me of our current dining area.

And the bedroom… it’s so white and clean. I love the woven shades with the draperies. I love the bay window area that serves as her workspace. There’s so much light and I’m pretty sure anyone would want to wake up in this room. Again, it’s clean, but it’s perfectly accessorized. Stunning.

My other movie dream home is the house from Father of the Bride. Love it. And that baby suite in Father of the Bride II is so drool-worthy.

What is your movie dream home? What do you love about it?

I absolutely LOVE that movie. I have seen it a million times. My favorite part about the whole house is her office area of the bedroom. I hope to one day have a bay window like that where I can sit and work :) I also adore the light and breezy colors in the living room. I wish I would have gone with that color pallete, but with dogs it’s hard :(

3 Elizabeth October 28, 2009 at 2:23 pm @eedawson

The house from Father of the Bride is my dream house! I love the porch in the back & Annie’s room.

Ahh! I love BOTH of those houses so much. I really enjoyed the small splash of dark color in the rooms during SGTG – like the one black river rock in the bowl of white rocks. I also love the house in Brothers & Sisters- especially the kitchen and the backyard- spacious yet intimate. I can just imagine my family sitting around, enjoying dinner & a glass of wine under the twinkling lights.

5 Samma October 28, 2009 at 2:28 pm

I adore this house. Sigh.

6 MrsPreppy October 28, 2009 at 2:32 pm

Like I said yesterday, I LOVE everything about this house. My dream TV house would be Nora Walker’s house on Brothers and Sisters. Her kitchen is beautiful.

7 Maggie P October 28, 2009 at 2:36 pm

My dream house is the one from Father of the Bride, also! I have loved that house since the movie came out, and after all these years, I still love it! I was so excited to drive by the house that was used for the exterior shots in Pasadena, CA. It is absolutely gorgeous.

8 Nina October 28, 2009 at 2:40 pm

there is only one word for this post. Obsessed.

I remember being totally enamored with the various shades of white platters on display and the kitchen… LOVE this post!

13 Molly October 28, 2009 at 3:45 pm

Love that went with this! Even though they were sets, we always drool over the exterior and interior in the movie. Our dream Hamptons house :-)

14 cyndi October 28, 2009 at 3:51 pm

I don’t know that I have a movie dream home but will start thinking about it. In the meantime I’m going to sit here and drool over the living room and pool area! We’re still working on our living room “refresh” and think I just may use some of that room as our inspiration. We don’t have a pool but when & if we ever do….I want an areal like the one picture. Awesome!!

15 Cee October 28, 2009 at 3:53 pm

That house was by far the best part of that movie haha…I just love everything about it!

It makes me sad to find out it was all sets :(

16 Sara October 28, 2009 at 3:55 pm

I’d be happy with just vacationing there. So beautiful! Sigh…

17 Lauren October 28, 2009 at 3:58 pm

20 Whitney October 28, 2009 at 4:13 pm @whitneymeade

I want Graham Simpkin’s house in England from The Holiday! Ah… I love that house. I’d take Iris’s little cottage, too :)

21 Krissy October 28, 2009 at 4:14 pm

Gorgeous home…so sad that it was just a set, though. What a waste! Loved FOTB home and baby suite too! :)

22 Domestic Goddess October 28, 2009 at 4:23 pm

great post! i love that movie and i’m pretty sure that house and all the decor is part of the reason!

23 Kristin October 28, 2009 at 4:25 pm

I absolutely love that movie (I watch it every time it’s on TV and I can) and I LOOOOOOOVE that house. I think it was one of the first houses in a movie that I ever even paid attention to. It’s fab. But now that I think about it, I do also like Jackie’s (Susan Sarandon) house in Stepmom. It just looks so lived in and cozy.

24 MeganTree October 28, 2009 at 4:25 pm

I LOVE the home in Father of the Bride!!! Its my all time favorite. Everything about it from the basketball goal in the back yard, to the fence around the front. LOVE IT ALL! This was a fun post!

25 Ally October 28, 2009 at 4:30 pm

OK, so, it’s not an actual house, but, I’d be more than happy to live on the set. Just sayin’.

Yes, this is probably my movie dream house.

26 Heather @ Sellers Gang Mama October 28, 2009 at 4:33 pm

I love the house in that movie! But I love Charlotte York’s apartment in Sex & the City. Super classy!

27 Megan October 28, 2009 at 4:35 pm

I have always loved the Father of the Bride house…the streets of San Marino really do look like the one in the movie! The other house I have always like was the one in Home Alone.

28 Meredith October 28, 2009 at 4:41 pm @mhj411

So funny that you said that about the house from Father of the Bride because as I was reading this post I was thinking to myself that I love that house so much! The kitchen in this house though, TO DIE FOR! Love it!

29 Amanda October 28, 2009 at 4:45 pm

Oh that Father of the Bride baby suite is gorgeous…along with the rest of the house!

30 Marla October 28, 2009 at 5:14 pm

Love, love Suasn Sarandon’s house in Stepmom…a big, New England cottage, warm & comfortable!

31 Maggie October 28, 2009 at 5:30 pm

That exterior, the kitchen, the dining room built in… Oh I just love it all. I haven’t seen that movie in forever so maybe it’s time I take a trip to Blockbuster!

32 Amber October 28, 2009 at 5:42 pm

Ever since I saw Father of the Bride I have dreamed of having Annie’s headboard and overall funkiness in her room. I wanted to be her when I grew up. Now, I have physical similarities but no desire to be an architect LOL I wouldn’t mind marrying a guy like Brian though LOL

I love Erica’s house from the movie…I need to be rich so I can have it LOL

33 Mrs. Dew October 28, 2009 at 6:26 pm

L.O.V.E. this house! I could totally live there!

34 Ruby Slippers October 28, 2009 at 6:29 pm

Ok, I need to watch this movie again! The bedroom – wow! But Father of the Bride has also always been a favourite of mine – so lovely and lived in and loved. And the baby suite – when I saw it at the cinema, the audience gasped at the reveal. YUM.

Although it’s totally crazy that they needed to ADD on to that huge house for the baby suite. They must have had so much space in there!

35 Anne October 28, 2009 at 8:07 pm

Love the movie, ADORE that house. The kitchen and dining room (I die for that collection of plates!) are fabulous…

36 Rachel October 28, 2009 at 8:46 pm

That kitchen is to die for. So perfect!!

I also love the FOTB house. It’s one of my all time favorite movies!!

37 Preppy 101 October 28, 2009 at 9:07 pm

41 Rachel October 29, 2009 at 7:56 am

I love this house too!! It’s SO great! :)

42 Emily October 29, 2009 at 8:43 am

I can’t believe that’s not a real house – it’s to die for!!! I’ve always loved it, and the FOB house too!!

43 Milltini October 29, 2009 at 10:08 am

Without question, my movie dream home would be Carrie and Big’s 5th avenue apartment that they never actually moved into in the movie, for the sole reason thnat I would KILL for the closet after they renovate it. I will always LOVE the Father of the Bride house in terms of decor and b/c I think that it is exactly the picture in my head of what a real family home looks like!

44 Barefoot in the Park October 29, 2009 at 10:43 am

i’ve always loved that house too!

45 Jill October 29, 2009 at 12:17 pm

Crud, that link for “Marley & Me” didn’t have the old farm house. Here’s the right link: http://hookedonhouses.net/2009/07/28/the-old-stone-farmhouse-in-marley-me/

46 Emily October 29, 2009 at 12:26 pm

Oh I remember the very first time I saw Father of the Bride and their home becoming my Dream Home for years! But the Somethings Gotta Give house takes the cake. I could live in her kitchen, for sure! The whole place reminds me of Martha’s Vineyard :-)

47 Squawkfox October 30, 2009 at 12:08 am @squawkfox

I love the house in this movie. When I gutted my kitchen I took photo stills for my cabinet maker. I love my new kitchen. ;)

48 Turner October 30, 2009 at 10:35 pm

I love that house too. Its AMAZING! I also love the FOB house. My Dad calls my husband and my house the “mini” FOB house. Love Hudson’s Halloween outfit!

49 anarchica November 2, 2009 at 6:21 pm

I am obsessed with the Aunt’s house in Practical Magic. I love everything about it! Also the main girls apartment in Stigmata!

50 lizziefitz November 3, 2009 at 10:31 am

Ditto ditto ditto!!! I could move in today!!!

51 Nicole November 7, 2009 at 10:39 am @nicolezappile

THIS is one of my FAVS too….The woman who did (director / producer / something like that) this movie ALSO did The Holiday. I LOVE those homes too!

52 Cherish January 16, 2010 at 1:04 am

Love love the somethings gotta give house especially the contrasting white kitchen cabinets with the black counters and shiny polished faucetry. Totally inspired me while building our new home and everyone says it belongs in a magazine when the see it! Charlotte York’s apt. and funishings so elegant and chic. But all time favorite movie house is home alone the first one. Such a great family house and dresses up so great for Christmas. Really great real house in an awesome real Chicago neighborhood!
