mamas, don’t let your babies grow up to be crawlers

by Blue-Eyed Bride on January 26, 2010

See this little guy? Look at him just lying there, sleeping. He’d cry quite a bit. He didn’t respond much to us. I wished so badly that he would give us some little sign that he knew we were there. About a month later, he smiled.

Then we started wanting him to laugh and roll over. He did that, too.

IMG_0785

When he started rolling over, he started sleeping on his tummy, so that gave us a lot of cause for concern. We wanted him to sit up, so he could do better at restaurants and be part of the family meals. And he did.

IMG_1173

Ever since he started sitting up, we’ve been just waiting for the day that he’d crawl. We couldn’t wait for him to crawl. Guess what? A week ago, at 7 1/2 months old, he started crawling. Hands and knees crawling. And guess what? He’s into everything! Everyone warned us not to wish for this day, and they were right.

Dog bowls, books, shelves, chewing on rugs, immediately reaching for the electrical sockets and cords, and pulling up on everything. There have been a few collisions and a lot of tears. But he’s proud of himself, and I’m proud for him!

Changing his diaper is nothing short of difficult. And you better hope he only tinkled because the chances of having a giant mess because he’s wiggling and squirming and crawling and nearly diving off the changing table is pretty great.

It’s true that I didn’t appreciate the days with a baby who rarely did anything at all other than sleep and cry. I wouldn’t go back to those days, but I’m starting to think that the key to my weight loss is going to be chasing around this little crawling boy!

Oh, what a big boy and you are in for so much fun! As for the diapers, I always wished to have Lallie out of diapers. And now that she’s potty training, I WISH she was back in diapers!!! :-)

What a GREAT blog post title! I laughed out loud.
I’m just floored by how fast the BEBurrito is growing~ I’d love for you to post some video of these crawling antics for us to see! :)
Sending lots of warm wishes to your great little fam!
xoxo,
Lulu

Congrats to Hudson!

5 Samma January 26, 2010 at 12:01 pm @spiceandsass

Aw, Hudson! Such a good reminder to appreciate every stage of life. You know Kelly Ripa says she is so skinny from chasing around her kids (hhmmmppph). I want to see a video!

I wish I could say it gets easier but it doesn’t. They start changing so fast its mind blowing. Ellie was walking by a year and potty trained at 18 months. Now she takes off to friends houses by herself and I have to force her to let me help with her hair. We always wish for them to grow up and then wish we hadn’t. But the best part is that there are always new firsts right around the corner. Now I’m about to cry. Sending love and prayers your way!!! Maybe Ellie’s little gift will get Hudson to hold still for a few minutes for one diaper change. :) Oh…and when she started rolling over we started changing her on the floor. Then at least there’s no chance of falling off the table. Good luck Mommy!! You are doing fabulous!!! Love ya!!! XOXO

OK, first of all, how is it possible that you look so dang good in that first picture? After having a baby and in a hospital gown no less! You give me hope that I may look decent in post baby birth pictures.

Yay for crawling Hudson–although, I’m sure it’s 120% exhausting–I’m sure you’re handling it all with grace and ease.

8 Ris January 26, 2010 at 12:44 pm

He is just the cutest, most smiling little boy ever! What a joy!

9 Catherine January 26, 2010 at 12:49 pm

oh huddy buddy, you’re growing up so fast! first of all, i can NOT believe you’ve been in this crazy world for 7 1/2 months. i remember the day you were born like it was yesterday. i slept so light through the night waiting for the text from your KK that you had arrived! YAY! i know we don’t get to see each other much, but one day you’ll realize how much i love you and your mommy! i’m going to hopefully come visit sooner than later and you better not be walking yet! sheesh! :)

10 melissa January 26, 2010 at 12:57 pm

Oh my, his sweet little face melts my heart. I’m sure as a crawler he’s a handful but you are one lucky momma! (I know you know this!) Enjoy this fun stage with your handsome little guy!

11 Erin J January 26, 2010 at 1:04 pm

What a cutie pie. My little guy is 14 months and started walking about a month ago. I have video of him learning to crawl though and he did all of those same things! Especially the wall outlets! They do get over that fascination with outlets and cords and rugs and bookshelves though. Okay, maybe not the bookshelves! Enjoy every minute with that little guy! Visit me sometime at http://www.jenningsbaby.blogspot.com! I’d love to see you there!

12 Positively Preppy in Pink January 26, 2010 at 1:11 pm

How sweet — an adorable litte crawling baby!! I’m sure you will have to chase him around now! :)

13 SouthernBelleJM January 26, 2010 at 1:25 pm @southernbellejm

Not that dogs can compare to babies, but that’s all I’ve got. My little Puggy. When I first got her, she could fit in my palm. And, she just grew up so fast! I can’t imagine what it’s like to watch your own baby grow up so fast. He’s so cute!!!!

14 Minnesota Girl January 26, 2010 at 1:27 pm

He’s soooo cute! I bet he’s totally into everything. Was babyproofing the home a pain? When I moved into my house, the house was baby proofed. My fiance’ un-proofed the whole house. Hopefully in a year or two, we’ll be proofing it =)

15 Melissa Wellington January 26, 2010 at 1:32 pm

So exciting! And soooo scary… what a good reminder. We’re at 6 1/2 months and I find myself wanting to see him crawl… but you are so right… it’s all chaos after that! Surely fun, but chaotic I bet! Even so, way to go Hudson! :)

16 Kate January 26, 2010 at 1:42 pm

He’s getting so big — I just love his cheeks! Go Hudson Go!

17 Laura January 26, 2010 at 1:57 pm

So exciting! I bet he’s so excited to be moving around. I can just imagine how much work it will be to chase him around. But such fun work!

18 Maggie January 26, 2010 at 2:07 pm

Ha, ha. I remember those days. I actually liked it better when he started walking. I was so over crawling. Try putting your changing pad on the ground to change him. I also started giving him something to play with like a teething toy to stop the movement for a few minutes. I hope that helps. This is about the point that my diaper changes became lightening fast. Now that Mac is two I usually change him standing up as long as its not a poopy diaper. It so amazing how quickly they change and grow. Your Hudson is so cute!

19 USCEmily January 26, 2010 at 2:26 pm

What a special milestone! I bet he is just adorable crawling around!
Now it’s time to really baby proof the house, huh?

20 Perfectly Imperfect January 26, 2010 at 2:44 pm

Your title just made me laugh out loud! I can only imagine how on the go he is. He’s got a lot to see!! I remember changing babies that could crawl, you practically need a 3rd arm just to wrestle them to the ground!!

21 LyndsAU January 26, 2010 at 2:49 pm

Ahhhh…. this makes me sad/excited! I get so sad to think of Addison doing these things! (tear). But I know it will be wonderful and fun at the same time. Just crazy and busy :) But that’s what being a mom is all about right? :)

He is just a precious sweet boy Erin! I can’t wait to meet him soon!

22 Julie January 26, 2010 at 3:46 pm @AngryJulie

Ahh, this is the fun time with little boys. I always say to my friends, enjoy months 6-9 because they are awesome. From nine months on, is where it gets a little adventurous. Caden was wild when he started crawling. He started walking soon after. Get to his level and make sure everything is out of his reach etc. And be sure you take lots of video. Because one days that crawling, and pulling up, will turn into steps!

23 Tiffany January 26, 2010 at 4:04 pm

I know exactly what you mean! My girls are 4, 2 and 5 months. It’s funny how much you anticipate the first time around and then dread after that. My mom was asking last night if we are feeding the baby and baby food… I responded by telling her that she was pushing the food out with her tongue and I didn’t have an extra 30 minutes to keep shoveling it off of her chin and putting it back in like I did the first time… so I was going to wait until she is a little older and try again.
They grow up so fast, and I really wish I could just slow them down sometimes! He’s adorable!!!

24 MeganTree January 26, 2010 at 4:49 pm

Ok love this title! Such sweet pictures of Huddy!

25 Anne January 26, 2010 at 5:18 pm @annesmithsc

Precious! Such a heartbreaking reminder that it really does go SO quickly. We’re exactly four months behind y’all, three and a half months in. The smiling and laughing and rolling over is just delightful! The thought of crawling and walking? Terrifying!! I know you’re so proud of him, though. He’s darling!

26 adrienne January 26, 2010 at 5:32 pm @adriennelevy

congratulations to hudson! you guys should get a flip http://www.theflip.com/en-us/ to catch all the funny little *quick* moments on camera! it is super easy to use and very small (easy to keep in back pocket!)

27 Sarah January 26, 2010 at 6:28 pm

I feel bad that I wished it away. I kept saying I can’t wait till…then I can’t wait till…now she is crawling like crazy! She doesn’t go too far or hasn’t found electrical sockets yet. It seems since she started crawling she has been sick and really clingy. A tip on the changing table deal: have a few items he can only play with while you are changing his diaper. She likes to play with her brush or this teether thing. It totally keeps her content. When we are done changing the diaper it goes right back in the bin by the changing table. Hope that helps!!!

28 Domestic Goddess January 26, 2010 at 6:33 pm

so fun that your little man is growing up! i bet your pups love that he is on the go now!

29 Laura January 26, 2010 at 6:36 pm @cameron_crazy

Oh my! We are right behind you. Any day now Cameron is going to start crawling! He is creeping, creeping, every day. :)

30 Abbey January 26, 2010 at 7:53 pm

Go Hudson! What a cutie!

31 julia January 26, 2010 at 8:06 pm

he’s mobile! I hear this is definitely when the fun really begins:)

32 Kassie January 26, 2010 at 8:55 pm

Good for little Hudson! :) And that picture of you and him in the hospital just couldn’t be any sweeter.

33 MrsPreppy January 26, 2010 at 11:03 pm @MrsPreppy

Isn’t it amazing how much stuff they can get into in such a short amount of time?!?! I can hardly believe that these littles are getting so big. Where has this year gone?

34 Rachel January 27, 2010 at 11:59 am

SO sweet…sounds a lot like my post today! There are things that I want to pass right now like the not sleeping at night, but I can’t imagine him getting bigger! He is so sweet and innocent right now!

35 Jennifer January 27, 2010 at 2:06 pm

Oh geez! Mine is scooting like crazy, and about to crawl any day now! Yikes!

36 Caycee January 27, 2010 at 2:56 pm

Yay For Hudson! Just wait until he starts walking! Carson took some steps right after his first birthday party :)

37 TheWaspyRedhead January 27, 2010 at 9:38 pm @WaspyRedhead

So exciting Erin! Congratulations. I studied child development in college, and I can tell that his progress is probably due to all the wonderful stimulation and support you’re giving him. You’re such a great Mom, I can’t wait till I have a family too!

38 Emily January 27, 2010 at 9:53 pm

We are still at the “not reacting to us” stage with my nephew, I can’t wait till he starts to respond it’s always so much fun.

39 Whitney January 28, 2010 at 1:47 pm

Oh girl, I feel your pain (and joy)! Our boys are growing up too too too too fast. Make it stop! Hudson is a living doll. :)

40 RLR January 30, 2010 at 1:04 pm

Ditto the ‘on the floor’ changes – so much easier! We eventually reached the ’standing up’ change (though only for wet, and not for messy, of course)!

41 Laura January 30, 2010 at 2:08 pm

Love all the pictures…He is so precious! Looks like you have your hands full now with a baby on the go!
