frequently asked questions… and answers

by Blue-Eyed Bride on September 1, 2010

I get a lot of reader emails and I love hearing from readers. But sometimes I hear from readers that haven’t been reading very long. And sometimes they ask questions that I have already answered in old posts that they probably haven’t seen.

So, for everyone’s benefit, I thought I’d answer the most frequently asked questions here.

Can you tell me your favorite brands for dressing Hudson? Where do you shop for his clothes?

I did a big post about shopping for baby boys a few months ago. I still go to the same places and look for the same brands. Kelly’s Kids, Ragsland, Shrimp and Grits, and Blessed Be The Name are also personal favorites. They can all be found online, but not in stores.

Shopping for Your Baby Boy

For the cooler months, I buy lots of turtle necks and long sleeve tee shirts for Hudson to wear underneath longalls. Pants fall down too easily and longalls stay up better. Plus they’re cute and I believe in dressing little boys like little boys.

What are some of your favorite gift ideas for a mom-to-be/new baby?

Right after Hudson was born I wrote this post that showed some of my favorite gifts that we received. These were all things that were either very useful or very beautiful.

Gift Ideas for the Mom-to-Be

What diaper bag do you use?

I have a Kate Spade messenger style diaper bag. It’s comfortable and easy to carry while carrying a baby. I can easily access everything inside. I can adjust the strap as needed. I tried on lots of different bags and this is the one that I thought would be best with carrying a baby and juggling the bag and getting inside of the bag.

And the best part? The inside is nylon and so easy to clean. Bottles have spilled in this bag and I’m so happy I didn’t get a bag that I was terrified of getting dirty!

How have you found other mom/baby friends, and how do you “network” with others in this new work role as a SAHM?

It was hard in the beginning because we were the first of our friends to have kids and none of my friends stayed home. Once I got Hudson involved in activities like Little Gym, I met more people and Hudson met more kids. He was already going to the church nursery and Sundays and getting lots of socialization there, but we were connecting with any of the parents. One of my newest, great friends is a result of meeting at Little Gym and I’m so happy we did!

I think the key is getting out there, finding things to do, and making plans. You may find a play group or a class that your child can join. But I promise there are other moms just like you who are looking for friends for themselves and for their kids, too.

Do you have any tips on how to make a blog successful? How did you take your blog from one that only people that you knew personally read and followed to one that thousands of people read? Was it purely just luck that people came across your blog once and then kept reading, or was there networking efforts on your part to make your blog more known? What will appeal to an audience beyond my family and friends that I know personally.

I am not an expert on blogging. I write my blog for me and for my family and I’m still surprised that more people than just my family come here to read it. For me, it happened when my blog was mentioned on a big wedding blog (because I was planning my wedding at the time) and people I didn’t know came over to check it out. And then I visited their blogs.

The big key is to comment on other blogs that you like. And don’t comment just to say, “please read my blog.” Comment on the blog content. Be genuine. You need to be blogging for yourself and not to gain readers.

I think that readers like authentic blogs. There doesn’t have to be complete transparency, but a little bit of transparency is nice. They want to be able to relate to you– or disagree with you. If your blog is about a specific topic this is a little bit different. You’ll stick to the topic. But if you have a blog like mine that is sometimes about family, sometimes about random thoughts, and sometimes about pretty things, it’s good to be able to put a little bit of yourself in there. And write what you want to write. Don’t write what you think readers will respond to because that never works. Write for yourself and the readers will come.

Another key is to build relationships. Find other blogs that are like yours and try to connect with the writer. When I first started reading other blogs and commenting, I went there every day and got really invested in these people’s lives. And I still feel that way. I don’t comment as often as I used to because my life is different now and I’m lucky if I just get to read.

Another tip I have is to blog consistently. You don’t have to blog every day, but you should try to blog every day. If people are looking forward to hearing from you, then let them hear from you!

If you choose to blog anonymously, try to find a way for readers to identify with you. So if you’re not posting your name, maybe you can still post pictures. My favorite blogs are the ones that I feel emotionally connected to and feel like I know the writer and her loved ones.

Three tips:

1. Be genuine

2. Be consistent

3. Be original

One of my blog buddies, Kate at Nautical by Nature, wrote this post about a week ago and it has a great outline for new bloggers.

Can you recommend any true Southern cookbooks?

I absolutely can! My two favorite Southern cookbooks are Cotton Country Collection and Down By the Water. Cotton Country is from the Monroe, Louisiana Junior League and Down by the Water is from the Columbia, South Carolina Junior League.

You can always bet that the Junior League cookbooks are going to be fantastic and full of fun recipes that have been passed down for years and years.

Of course you can always go with Paula Deen and count on it being delicious.

If you have any questions feel free to fill out the comment form under the “Contact Me” tab. It sometimes takes me a while to write back, but I’ll always try to respond!

I could not agree with you more on being genuine, consistent and orginal with blogging. I love reading blogs, commenting etc… I always learn something new from each blog and that is why I love reading and blogging :)

Fun post! I remember reading about these things the first time you blogged about them but it’s always nice to get reminders!

3 NINA September 1, 2010 at 11:19 am

Great explanation of blogging and thank you for the reminder that I need to blog every day! :) Over the last year I’ve been very bad at this practice. I’ve struggled with finding the time to write and gaining the strength to write no matter what comments were to follow. Once I took the job with the ad firm my time was cut even more. I’m ready to start writing more and getting back to blogging basics… writing, reading & connecting with others. After all, it’s how I met you!

Thanks, Erin, for the cookbook recommendations! I never thought of checking the local Junior League cookbooks but what a great idea!

5 Lauren Kelly September 1, 2010 at 11:30 am

I REALLY loved the way you responded to the blog question!!!!! :)

These are some great tips for us newbie bloggers. I guess I should start writing more! I love the cookbook recommendations, too. My husband does most of the cooking, but I have a thing for cookbooks. I love to look at them and get ideas. Let’s face it, I just love to eat!

Great tips for new bloggers. :) Thanks Erin!

Great advice for new and old bloggers alike! I feel like I’ve gotten so stuck in a non-posting, get-it-all-out-on-Twitter mode for the last few months… This is a wonderful reminder to get back to the basics of what brought us all together in the first place! Investing in people’s content, and leaving genuine comments of love and support. Oh, and maybe actually posting again more than one a month! ;) Thanks for the wonderful reminder!
Love,
Lu

Thank you so much for answering the question that I sent! You offer some great advice. My big struggle with blogging is consistency… I’ll do 5 posts one week and then 1 the next. And commenting! I always feel like a creeper when I comment on blogs where I don’t know the writer personally, but I guess that stepping out of my comfort zone of commenting is part of networking and making new friends. Thanks for the great advice!

Thank you so much Erin!! I actually remember reading some of those posts, but I don’t think I was paying too close of attention, becuase they didn’t pertain to me! I love the blankie idea!! You’re the best! Have great Wednesday!

You are SO right about Junior League Cookbooks! They are hands-down the best source for tried-and-true Southern recipes. We moved a lot in our first 6 years of marriage and I started a tradition of buying the JL cookbook for each place we lived. Memories + recipes!

I think your blog is authentic and very honest. Sometimes you write about simple, but happy days with your family, and other days are about ‘you know, I’m struggling here’. For me, that’s what keeps it interesting. We all have great days, and we all have days where we don’t even know why we are trying to matter. You’re honest about it, and it reminds us that the other shoe does drop every now and then. For everybody.

The cute baby pictures don’t hurt, either. I think the latest set are the cutest, purest ones you have ever shared, and you put up a lot. The look of joy on that angel’s face as he is playing in his new tent is priceless, and I peek at them about once a day, because I know I am going to smile. Win, win.

Finally, you’re a NYC girl. Me too. We like the same places. I don’t have to say much else!!

You would probably LOVE Orient Expressed too! They have great shortalls for little boys :)

14 Gage September 1, 2010 at 1:15 pm

Another great cookbook is River Road Recipes from the Baton Rouge, LA Junior League. My Alabama mom has been using it for the last 30 years!

Paula Dean isn’t only delicious her recipes are “Stinkin delicious y’all!” ***Say that part with a Paula Dean accent!

I fully agree with you on your three blogging tips. You really do a great job of inviting readers into your life in a friendly way and have great tips. I’m really hoping to start another blog soon where I talk more about me (instead of the Hollywood blog I started years ago). Another goal!

Great job once again! You rock! I’m definitely gonna take your advice on the blogging!!! Thanks for blogging about it! Good luck with choir tonight!

18 Lauren September 1, 2010 at 2:03 pm

You and I have the exact same baby boys’ clothing tastes. I love all of the clothes you featured for Hudson, we have the same brands, and even have some of the same outfits. One thing I have done (and I know it’s not for everyone!) is to shop on eBay. I have found a plethora of cute, remarkably cheaper clothing that either still has tags or has been worn once or twice. I’ve bought ALL of J’s fall smocked and appliqued clothes off of eBay and have saved a fortune. It’s all last season but I could care less!

Thank you so much for the blogging advice! I remember how excited I was when I read about the “auto-post” feature! Hah! Great post :)

I love what you said about blogging. I’ve been contacted by several people asking me the same question and my advice is always the same. I love your blog though

21 Laura Yates September 1, 2010 at 7:22 pm

Love the diaper bag section! So here’s another question: Do you carry your handbag and diaper bag at the same time?? Dumb question but it’s something that makes me break out in hives when I think about having a baby and all the luggage! Haha! Am I a nut or what??!

22 Nikki September 1, 2010 at 10:16 pm

Great idea about looking into Junior League cookbooks! You get great recipes and support other Junior Leagues! I am in the Junior League of Waco, Texas and we have a great book called Simply Serving. I’ll have to look at other League books. Thank you for sharing all of your tips! What was the hardest adjustment finding out you were pregnant with Hudson so early in your marriage?

23 Happiness Is... September 1, 2010 at 10:21 pm

The whole reason I got hooked on your blog to begin with was your approach to dressing Hudson – sounds crazy, I know, especially since I was still on birth control at the time. Now that I am 99% sure I have a boy in my belly, I can’t wait to (hopefully) use it as a resource! I also totally agree with you on getting invested in people’s lives. When I know what’s going on (i.e. that there’s something big coming up or something to pray for, etc) I get really hooked and involved and then need to know what happens. But it’s beyond just being curious, I actually start to really care. Blogging is a strange, neat thing!

Thanks for the shoutout! I love your 3 tips. I am always trying to sum up blog tips for new readers and your guide is perfect :)

25 Kate September 2, 2010 at 12:51 am

PS- I really like your advice about finding other moms/friends too. I’m not a SAHM but it can be rough as a nanny if you don’t have anyone to talk to! I am so glad we joined a Gymboree class. I’ve met some really nice moms and nannies :)

26 Heather September 2, 2010 at 9:19 am

This was fun to read!

27 Becky September 2, 2010 at 11:02 am

I am loving your blog!
Thanks for the clothing ideas–I tend to get into a rut with my little one’s wardrobe. He’s 19 months. I have bought things from Kelly’s Kids and have been pleased, though I found that their sizes run a little small?.

28 Kristi September 2, 2010 at 1:03 pm

Thanks for all of the blogging tips, I’m a new blogger so i really appreciate them!

By the way, your little boy is super adorable!

29 Clattie September 2, 2010 at 2:18 pm

Erin- I LOVE your Blog!! Ran across it months ago and am ashamed to admit that I have been blog stalking you!! Finally after reading about how important it is to comment on the blogs, I am!! Yay!! I did have a question about your header on your Blog. Mine is ummm….Boring!! I need to spice it up!! Any recommendations on how I can do that? Cheap, easy way?

Thanks!!

LOVE love Junior League cookbooks. Momma had one she bought in 1987 and I stole it from her a few years ago!

31 Kristin Stuart September 3, 2010 at 1:39 pm

Love Love Love the Cotton Country Cookbook! We stick to our roots Erin! I have to say I love JL cookbooks no matter where they are from, but I have never tried out the Columbia one. I might have to purchase one of those very soon.

Lucky for you that you get the good staple color of black in your gameday outfit. I have to specifically shop for orange and blue and better yet clothes that are cool enough for me to where in the heat of a 12:00 noon game! We are sitting this week out and heading to Gainesville next weekend!
